Will NExT Replace NEET PG This Year? Latest Update on NExT Implementation, NEET PG and its Schedule
Medical aspirants from across India are looking forward to answer to one important question. Will National Exit Test (NExT) replace NEET PG in 2026? According to recent news, NEET PG is going to be entrance test for postgraduate medical admission this year, whereas NExT has been postponed for some time. The confusion regarding NExT test has left many MBBS students applying for MD, MS, PG Diploma and DNB admissions in a fix. However, according to recent reports, decision has been taken by NMC to delay NExT, which is indeed a big relief for NEET PG aspirants.
NExT Will Not Replace NEET PG in 2026
According to recent updates, National Exit Test (NExT) is unlikely to replace NEET PG for 2026. It is believed that medical education officials have delayed introduction of NExT owing to talks about infrastructure, evaluation techniques and curriculum synchronisation. Thus, applicants planning to register for postgraduate courses in medicine in year 2026 will continue to be evaluated based on National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate Courses (NEET PG). This means applicants will not have to change their preparation strategy, as they will continue to give exam on NEET PG eaxm pattern.
Why has NExT Been Deferred?
According to experts, government wants to ensure a seamless launch across country before scrapping an already existing examination like NEET PG exam. The following are some reasons behind delayed implementation of NExT:
Infrastructure required for conducting examinations
Problems faced by medical colleges and other stakeholders
Curriculum and assessment reform requirements
Smooth transition from present examination pattern
What is NExT?
NExT was suggested as an exam that could be used for more than one purpose. The adoption of NExT will result in its replacement of both NEET PG and FMGE. However, its implementation still requires evaluation and it may take some time until test is implemented.
NEET PG 2026: Expected Schedule
With the implementation of NExT being delayed, route to be followed for getting into postgraduate medical courses will continue to be NEET PG. The tentative date of NEET PG is 30 August 2026 and its application process is set to start in last week of June 2026.
Exam Pattern Expected for NEET PG 2026
For candidates appearing in NEET PG 2026, knowledge about structure of upcoming exam would definitely help in planning their preparation. The exam would probably be conducted following current pattern, that is, multiple-choice questions, computer-based mode and subjectwise division based on MBBS syllabus.
What Should Aspirants Do Now?
The latest update is beneficial for medical graduates who are preparing themselves for postgraduate admissions. As the NExT system is not likely to be introduced for 2026 year, candidates are recommended to keep preparing for NEET PG as per current syllabus and pattern. Students are recommended to keep themselves updated about NExT system through NBEMS and NMC notifications. For this year, NEET PG continues to be only way of getting admissions in MD, MS, PG Diploma and DNB programs in India.
