West Bengal NEET PG Counselling
Surjeet Kumar Singh
Content Writer

The counselling for the West Bengal NEET PG 2026 is conducted by the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC). This is the way through which the students can get admission into the MD, MS and Diploma courses in the state of West Bengal. These seats are of various categories like the 50% State Quota in Government Colleges, seats in Private Medical Colleges and the Special Quota for in-service doctors working under the state government. This is an important process for anyone who wants to enhance their career in the field of medicine.

In order to be eligible to receive this counselling, candidates must have qualified in the NEET PG exam 2026  by securing a higher cutoff percentile than the required. An MBBS degree from a college recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) is also required. They must also complete their compulsory rotatory residential internship by the due date, which is in the summer of 2026. It is also a must to have a permanent or provisional registration with the NMC or the West Bengal Medical Council.

The counselling is done in several stages, which include Round 1 and Round 2 counselling, followed by Mop-Up counselling and Stray Vacancy counselling. The counselling is done through online registration, payment of fees, verification of documents and then "choice filling," where candidates fill in their college and subjects of choice. Top colleges such as IPGMER Kolkata, Medical College Kolkata and NRS Medical College come under this counselling. There are several private colleges as well, such as KPC and IQ City.

West Bengal NEET PG Counselling Seat Allotment Process

The West Bengal NEET PG 2026 seat allotment process is a technical process carried out by the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC) using its automated system. The process involves the following steps:

Step 1: After physical document verification, the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee prepares the State Merit List. This list includes only those candidates whose documents have been successfully verified.

Step 2: The candidate must log in to the website and fill out their preferred choices of "College and Subject." The number of choices is unlimited and the candidate must "Lock" their choices by the due date otherwise, the system will automatically "Lock" the last saved choices.

Step 3: The automated system will process the application based on the following criteria:

  • The candidate’s State Merit Rank.
  • The Category/Quota of the candidate (SC, ST, OBC, In-Service, PwD, etc.).
  • The Order of Preference.

Step 4: The system will first try to fill the candidate’s seat under the Open/Unreserved (UR) Category. If the candidate’s rank does not qualify under the UR Category, the system will try to fill the seat under the Reserved Category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS).

Step 5: The provisional allotment list will be available on the official website. The candidate needs to log in to download their Individual Allotment Letter.

Step 6: After the seat allotment, the candidate has three options:

  • Accept and Freeze: The candidate can choose this option if he wants to join the college.
  • Accept and Upgrade: The candidate can choose this option if he wants to join the college and choose "Yes" for upgradation.
  • Non-Joining (Round 1 only): The candidate can choose this option if he wants to use the "Free Exit" option and appear for the next round.

Step 7: The candidate needs to report to the principal of the allotted college along with the Allotment Letter and Original Documents. The college authority will verify the documents and after checking the medical fitness, the Server-Generated Admission Slip will be generated.

Step 8: In the next round, if the candidate is upgraded to a higher preference, then the candidate's seat of the candidate will be cancelled and added to the available pool for the next candidate.

Based on the guidelines set by the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC) for the previous year, the following table shows the important rules and regulations set for the counselling process of the 206 NEET PG counselling 2026 cycle.

Feature

Statutory Guidelines & Rules

Round 1 Exit (Free Exit)

Candidates allotted a seat in Round 1 who do not report or join the institution are granted a Free Exit. The security deposit is not forfeited and they remain eligible for Round 2 without fresh registration.

Upgradation Policy

Upgradation is permitted from Round 1 to Round 2 and from Round 2 to Round 3. Candidates must physically report to the initially allotted college, complete admission formalities and submit Willingness for Upgradation on the portal.

Exit with Forfeiture

Applicable if a candidate is allotted a seat in Round 2 or subsequent rounds and fails to join. In such cases, the security deposit is forfeited and the candidate must register and pay the fee again to participate in further rounds.

Forfeiture of Security Deposit

The deposit is forfeited if:

1. A seat is allotted in Round 2/3/Stray and the candidate does not join.

2. The candidate provides fraudulent documents during verification.

3. A candidate resigns from a joint Round 2 seat.

Exit after Round 2 Joining

Once a candidate joins a seat in Round 2 or later, they are generally ineligible to resign or participate in further counselling rounds (State or All India). Resignation at this stage attracts the Discontinuation Bond penalty.

Stray Vacancy Round Rules

No Free Exit is permitted. If a seat is allotted in the Online Stray Vacancy Round, the candidate must join. Failure to do so results in forfeiture of the deposit and debarment from the NEET PG exam for the following academic year.

Security Deposit Amounts

• Government Colleges: INR 10,000 (UR/OBC)/INR 5,000 (SC/ST/EWS)

• Private Colleges: INR 1,00,000 (All Categories)

• Deemed Universities: INR 2,00,000 (via MCC/AIQ)

Anti-Ragging Guidelines

Common Mistakes to Avoid in West Bengal NEET PG Counselling

  • It is important to note that the candidates must ensure that they are eligible for the specific eligibility criteria of the State Quota (SQ). Non-domicile candidates are eligible for Management Quota seats in private institutions.
  • Unlike the All India Quota, the candidates of West Bengal are required to undergo mandatory physical document verification in the centres designated by the government (for example, IPGMER). If the candidates are not present in the session, they will not be allowed to attend the counselling.
  • In-service candidates belonging to WBMES, WBHS and WBPHAS must have a valid Trainee Reserve certificate. If the candidates apply for the 40% reserved service quota without fulfilling the required years of service and proper certification, their applications will be rejected.
  • It is not advisable to limit the choices to fewer institutions with higher cutoffs. A wide range of colleges should be chosen to cover the annual fluctuations in the ranks and shifts in the categories.

Expert Tips for Candidates in West Bengal NEET PG Counselling

  • All certificates, mark sheets, ID proofs and the NEET PG scorecard should be kept ready in hand to avoid last-minute confusion.
  • The official counselling dates and deadlines should be adhered to. Non-adherence may result in the cancellation of the counselling.
  • Care should be taken in analysing the seat matrix to make better decisions in counselling.
  • Colleges and specialities should be chosen according to the goal of the career. Choices should be filled strategically to have a higher chance of securing a seat in a desired college or speciality.
  • Be prepared to opt for alternative colleges or branches in case of non-availability of first preferences to continue academic progress.
  • Official notifications and information posted only on the official counselling website should be referred to.
