In a major boost for medical aspirants across India, National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially approved an expansion of undergraduate medical seats. It has allowed an increase in medical seat intake for 2026-2027 academic year. Following this, NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) issued Letters of Permission (LoP) to multiple government medical colleges to expand their intake. The announcement comes at a time when students are getting ready for NEET-UG 2026 counselling, which is scheduled to start in August 2026. The additional seats are aimed at improving local healthcare and enabling local youth to seize opportunity for coveted seats in government medical colleges.

State-Wise Distribution of New MBBS Seats

According to recent National Medical Commission directives, there has been an increase in number of seats in several states such as Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Jammu & Kashmir and Tamil Nadu. The highest number of MBBS seats was allotted to Andhra Pradesh. Below is a table that shows exact number of MBBS seats allotted by NMC for 2026-27 session:

Regional Highlights: Key Changes Across States

The revised seat matrix reflects latest state-wise changes in MBBS admissions after NEET UG exam. Check regional highlights to understand where new seats have been added.

  • Andhra Pradesh: Andhra Pradesh’s state health department revealed that Andhra Pradesh has been allotted a remarkable increase of 275 MBBS seats this year alone, with an overall increase of 450 seats in past three years. The enhancement of Vijayawada, Kadapa and Piduguralla will help decrease dependence on private colleges for students in state.

  • Goa: Goa Chief Minister, Mr Pramod Sawant, officially welcomed NMC’s decision to allow annual intake in Goa Medical College to increase from 200 to 250 seats. This has been pointed out as an essential step to enhance manpower in health sector in region.

  • Jammu & Kashmir: The two leading medical institutions in Jammu and Srinagar have been allotted an equal increase of 50 seats. Health and Medical Education Department has informed that such an increase is due to infrastructure improvement and provides an opportunity for youth in Union Territory.

  • Tamil Nadu: In Tamil Nadu, 150 new seats have been allotted in Namakkal and Tiruppur campuses, marking first time in five years that state has increased its seats in medical colleges.

Impact on NEET UG 2026 Cutoffs

It is expected that increase in number of seats in system will help to reduce competition in counselling rounds for quota seats at state level. With an increase in number of seats provided by government under subsidised fee structure, there can be a positive decline in ranks of competition for opening and closing ranks in general and reserved categories. These seats will take part in both 15 per cent All India Quota (AIQ) and 85 per cent State Quota processes in upcoming counselling process, which is set to begin in August 2026. Candidates are advised to keep themselves updated through website of National Medical Commission (nmc.org.in) and Medical Counselling Committee (mcc.nic.in).
