NEET PG 2026 Exam Pattern Revised: Check Latest Changes, Question Format and Important Guidelines

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has officially revised exam pattern for NEET PG 2026. This year, there have been many changes made to exam pattern with distribution of questions and cities for appearing in exam. Those medical graduates who want to appear in this postgraduate medical entrance test must check latest changes on NBEMS official site at nbe.edu.in. As per the official schedule, online registration process for NEET PG 2026 started on July 1, 2026 and last date for applying is July 21, 2026. The computer-based entrance exam will be held on August 30, 2026, in one single shift only.

Key Highlights of NEET PG 2026 Exam Pattern Changes

In NEET PG 2026, the total number of questions will be decreased from 200 to 180. However, there will be no changes to overall duration of examination, which will remain 3 hours 30 minutes. The following table will help in comparing old exam pattern and new NEET PG 2026 exam pattern:

NEET PG 2026 New Question Format and Section-Wise Time Limits

This reduction in number of questions is meant to reduce exam stress. With 210 minutes still allocated to candidates, they will be able to take their time analysing questions. But by far most important change is creation of 5 distinct timed sections.

• Questions Per Section: The 180 MCQs are split into 5 sections with 36 MCQs each.

• Time Per Section: Each section gets 42 minutes.

• No Navigation Backwards: At end of 42 minutes of a certain section, section gets locked. Candidates will not be able to go back to a section to check their answers or make changes to it.

• Mark for Review: The "Mark for Review" option is still available, but can only be used in current section. If candidates move to next section, they won’t be able to revisit those questions marked.

The question types will continue to concentrate on clinical case vignettes, picture-based questions and single best answers from MBBS syllabus (Pre-clinical, Para-clinical and Clinical disciplines).

NEET PG 2026 Marking Scheme

The basic pattern of marking for entrance test is still unchanged from past years:

• Right answer: 4 marks

• Wrong answer: – 1 mark (Negative Marking)

• No answer: 0 marks

As the number of questions is 180 in all, highest score that can be attained in NEET PG 2026 test is 720 marks.

Important Guidelines and New Rules for Candidates

Besides the changes made in pattern of core examination, NBEMS has set up rigid norms for registration and allocation of centres:

• State-wise Test Centre Allocation: Candidates have to give their top three preferences for test centres, where first preference has to be same as state of the correspondence address. Centre allocation this year will not be on a first-come, first-served basis.

• Adherence to Aadhaar Details: Candidates must furnish their correct Aadhaar card details during online registration.

• Registration Fee: The registration fee is ₹3,500 for General, EWS and OBC category candidates and ₹2,500 for SC, ST and PwD candidates.

Candidates should make sure that they prepare for final exam by attempting online mock tests within a strict 42-minute limit.
