NEET PG 2025-26 Cutoff Case to be Heard by SC on 28 April

Supreme Court of India will consider a batch of cases challenging the government’s decision to reduce cut-off percentile for NEET PG 2025-26 on 28th April 2026. A division bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe heard the case. The bench stated that it would examine whether reduction could impact quality of postgraduate medical education. The cases were filed after National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences' decision to reduce qualifying percentile during NEET PG counselling third round. Appearing for petitioners, Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan argued that only a limited number of candidates had been admitted to available seats. He stated that the existing qualified students were sufficient to fill all seats. Therefore, he contended that reducing cutoff was unnecessary. He further added that many eligible applicants did not opt for vacant seats due to high fee structure. Conversely, Advocate DS Naidu, appearing for an aspirant in favour of cut-off reduction, reflected Centre’s position. He reiterated that the cut-off reduction would not affect quality of education, since all applicants would be MBBS graduates.
