Georgia Facts

Located at the intersection between West Asia and East Europe, Georgia is a former Soviet republic that got its independence in the year 1991. Though Georgia has a multiparty system, it’s still a unitary republic that has only 1 legislative house. Not many might know but the great Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was born in this country.

As it’s bound by the Caucasian Mountains on the north, the country is protected from the cold winds coming from the north. On the other hand, its location on the banks of the Black Sea ensures a constant supply of warm and moist air currents. The Black Sea is located on the west as a result Western Georgia receives a high rainfall (maximum in winters and autumn), while the rainfall decreases as we move eastwards.

The locals don’t even refer to their country as “Georgia”. Instead, they call it Saqartvelo. It’s believed that during the Middle Ages, St. George was the patron Saint of this region and thus, the name Georgia.

Not many might know but Georgia is the birthplace of “Wine”. The story goes that an individual left grape juice in an earthen pot (Qvevri) and left it buried in a shallow pit. The result? Georgia’s finest wine!

In fact, this Qvevri has been included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Additionally, the Bagrati Cathedral, Gelati Monastery, Mtskheta (ancient capital and significant stop on the Silk Route) as well as the ancient villages and towers in the Svaneti region are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Georgia is also home to the deepest cave in the world i.e. the Veryovkina Cavein the Gagra Mountain range (west Caucuses).

Georgia is also home to the highest settlement in Europe i.e. the ancient villages in Ushguli that are almost 2,100 metres above sea level.

Finally, along with having 12 different climatic zones, Georgia is also one of the most diverse regions in terms of fauna (bears, wolves, larynxes, etc.).

There are also marked elevation zones, some of which are located upto 2000 ft and have a subtropical climate, while others are located upto 6000 ft and have an alpine climate. Those present above 10,000 ft have year long ice and snow. Apart from these, there are some unknown things about Georgia that you might not know about: -
