Over 18.8 Lakh Indian Students Study Abroad: Canada Tops 4.27 Lakh
More than 18.8 lakh Indian students are pursuing education in foreign countries which makes India one of the largest sources of international students worldwide. Kirti Vardhan Singh who is the External Affairs Minister of India shared this figure in the Rajya Sabha highlighting a massive trend in student mobility. Students are spread across 153 countries to get better opportunities amid the rising demand for global degrees.
Top Destinations Leading the Trend
Canada tops the list with 4.27 lakh Indian students who are attracted mainly by the excellent opportunity for post-study work and quality education. The U.S. comes next with 2.55 lakh, while the UAE surprisingly appears at the second spot with 2.53 lakh students. The UAE is popular among students mainly because of its proximity and affordable courses. Lastly, Australia hosts 1.96 lakh and the UK 1.73 lakh students completing the top five hotspots.
These numbers reflect broader patterns seen in 2025 reports, where Canada and the US remain favourites. Other minor countries like Armenia and Cyprus also attract students but mainly medical aspirants looking for quicker entry paths. This is a sign that the diversification continues even in the case of the traditional powers.
Rising Challenges: Deportations and Visa Violations
Over the past 5 years, hundreds of Indian students faced deportation or entry denials due to visa norm breaches. The main issues include illegal work, unpaid tuition, poor attendance and incomplete paperwork, which undoubtedly puts their careers at risk. The UK deported 170 students which is the highest, while the US sent back 45 and denial entry to 62 others. This is not just about the UK and US, and as many Indian students study abroad, countries like Australia, Russia, Ukraine and many others have also reported similar cases, signalling stricter enforcement globally.
Government Steps to Protect Students Abroad
The Ministry of External Affairs extends its active support to students through constant communication and issuing warnings regarding institutions that are not accredited. Quick assistance for emergencies like legal problems or financial difficulties is provided through dedicated portals, 24/7 helplines, and welfare funds. Moreover, the MEA’s history is impressive in major evacuations like Operation Ganga from Ukraine and Operation Kaveri from Sudan, where it saved thousands of people during wars.
Why so many Indians Study Abroad?
This surge is connected to the restricted number of seats in top Indian universities including IITs and IIMs. Due to which young people decide to take a trip abroad. Not only this, but the foreign degrees offer global acceptance, high-paying jobs and immigration paths. According to the trends of 2025, these are the fields like STEM, AI and business that attract the most professionals to move abroad.
Despite the figures reaching the highest levels, the expert opinion is that there were a few years with a slight decline in the numbers due to visa obstacles and high costs. Nevertheless, the figure of over 18.8 lakh indicates that Indian youth are still going abroad for world-class skills.
